Reversion

The automatic transfer of a tenancy upon the termination of the current tenant’s interest. In manorial practice, reversions were commonly granted in advance to named individuals (the ‘next taker’) who would succeed to the tenancy when the existing lease ended, typically upon the death of the current tenant. These reversionary grants frequently extended through multiple successive lives (customarily three), creating a predetermined chain of succession that provided security for tenant families.
